Behind this gigantic gate, admire the incredible entrance.
The great mosque
Duration: 2 hours
The Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque, also known as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, is an architectural gem built under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Zayed Al Nahyane. Ranked among the top 5 largest mosques in the world, its surface area of 2,412 square meters allows you to discover a sumptuous place of worship and culture in equal measure. It is the only mosque in the Emirates open to visitors and tourists.
Its construction took 12 years, from 1995 to 2007, and required the expertise, engineering and craftsmanship of several countries. Participants included the UK, India, Morocco, Italy, China, Turkey, Iran and Germany. The mosque's dazzling white marble comes from a mountain in Macedonia, purchased in its entirety by the United Arab Emirates for a unique color scheme.
Abu Dhabi's Grand Mosque also holds several world records.
Abu Dhabi Fort
Duration: 1h30
It is Abu Dhabi's oldest and most important building, housing the city's first permanent structure; the watchtower. Built around 1790, the dominant structure overlooked the coastal trade routes and protected the growing colony established on the island.
The fort, now a historical museum, tells the story of the birth and formation of the Emirates from 1790 to 2000. The personal belongings and original politico-commercial agreements of their leaders are preciously housed here.
You'll also have access to the Emirates Handicraft Museum, located at the back of the museum in an annex, where you'll be served coffee prepared by your side in the traditional way.
Lunch:
It's in a typical Persian Gulf establishment that you'll have lunch; a secret address appreciated by the Emirati people, with only locals as customers. You can choose to enjoy your lunch in the traditional way or at a table.
Breakfast composition:
Green salad or Lentil soup
Grilled fish fillet or marinated chicken
Rice flavoured with Emirati spices (cardamom, saffron)
